Wood, concrete, and drywall screws

It is important to choose the right screw when working with specific materials. Whether it’s drywall screws, concrete screws, or wood screws, we have them at Ahlsell. We have gathered a wide selection of screws in various types so that you achieve the most optimal result.

Should I choose screws with fine or coarse threads?

A drywall screw can have different types of threads, which you can use for various materials. For example, if you need to mount objects onto a substrate behind the drywall made of steel, you should use a screw with fine threads. If the substrate, on the other hand, is made of wood, you should consider a screw that has coarse threads. Wood screws indeed have a coarser thread, which grips better in the wood fibers.

The length of the screw depends on how many drywall panels the screws need to go through, as well as whether it is wood or steel that it needs to grip. If the substrate is wood, the screw needs to go deeper to get a proper hold in the soft wooden studs. If you are mounting heavier items on a drywall, it might be a good idea to use the right raw plugs. This way, your objects will be held securely, minimizing the risk of them falling off the wall.

Screws for outdoor use

Are you mounting items outside? At Ahlsell, we also have particle board screws for outdoor use. These are characterized by being rust-free due to their surface treatment. You can choose between an A2 or A4 treatment, and the differences may be greater than you think. An A2 screw is rust-free in areas not located near the sea or acid found in various types of wood. This means that the screw's surface is resistant to moisture, wind, and condensation.

Is the location near the sea? Then you should consider a screw that is classified as A4. This is the most durable type of screw concerning corrosion. Here, the screw will not be affected by the salty air and acid that you may experience with A2 screws. These screws do not have the same materials in their surface treatment.

You might be lucky to find wood screws for outdoor use. Most wood and concrete screws indeed have a thick layer of surface treatment. If you need screws for bathrooms or other wet areas, you can also use several of our drywall screws.

Screws for more demanding needs

Are you used to working with heavier constructions? Then standard drywall screws are hardly enough. Most screws have a notch, and this is well-suited for less demanding tasks as the weight is rarely heavy. For awnings, post holders, or other heavy items, French screws and concrete screws are what you need.

They are designed in a way that allows you to tighten them significantly more than screws with a notch for screwdrivers or power tools. If you overload a notch, you will destroy it, making it almost impossible to remove the screw. Therefore, French screws are often made with a hexagonal head like a bolt. Here you can advantageously use a wrench, a socket wrench, or an adjustable spanner. Concrete screws have a more robust corrosion protection and are therefore more durable for heavy constructions.

Many of our French and concrete screws are also treated to prevent corrosion. This is suitable for environments that are either indoors or outdoors. An FZB surface treatment provides a shiny surface and is often best suited for indoor use. If, on the other hand, you want your screws to be as protected as possible in corrosive environments, you should take a look at our FZV screws.

FZV, also called hot-dip galvanizing, is best for areas that are very humid or have a high salt content in the air. They have been immersed in molten zinc, which forms a protective layer on concrete and wood screws. This ensures that you should experience a longer lifespan for your screws.

Get the job done with the right tools

Screws are, of course, important if you need to mount or fasten items to another unit. But to achieve a good result, durable and effective tools are a necessity. You may have a lot of quality tools that can also handle the task precisely. If not, you can advantageously take a look at our solid tools. We have everything from power tools, welding, cable reels, and much more.

Frequently asked questions

What length screw should I choose?
It depends on what you are mounting. You should ensure that the screw is long enough to pass through the item and that you can also reach the substrate beneath your item. That way, you can be sure that your mounting is solid and that it won't suddenly fall down.

How should I store my screws?
It is best to store your screws in the boxes they come in, as these indicate the size of the screws. They are often made of cardboard, and therefore can be affected by a humid environment. You can advantageously store them in a closed container where you can label what screws are in the container.

Can I buy nuts for my screws?
At Ahlsell, we of course have a wide selection of screws, and we also have nuts. You can therefore also explore our large selection of nuts. We have everything from locking nuts, welding nuts, and much more. With a nut, you get the most stable and secure experience.
