What is the difference between hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel?
When steel is manufactured, it is initially cast into "slabs," which are thick plates of steel. After that, it needs to go through the processing process. When the steel plates are still hot, they are passed through steel rollers, which are powerful rollers that shape the glowing hot steel into thinner plates. This is called hot-rolled steel and is one of the most common methods for making steel plates.
Cold-rolled steel goes through the same process as hot-rolled steel. However, after the hot part, the steel is cleaned and rolled further to a thinner thickness. This way, cold-rolled steel provides a more precise flatness as well as a more refined surface finish.
If you need a steel plate for more demanding needs, you should consider a cold-rolled steel plate. It is indeed stronger and can withstand a greater load for a longer time than hot-rolled steel. However, the plate requires more processing and is often more expensive than hot-rolled steel.
Which surface treatment should I choose for my steel plate?
Common steel can be used indoors and outdoors, but if you need it for outdoor use, you should ensure that it has been surface treated. Galvanizing or zinc coating are among the most common ways to surface treat for protection against wind, rain, and snow. This way, you avoid rust, and you don’t have to worry about maintaining your steel plate.
If you use screws or other fastening products that are surface treated in this way, you should consider using them only indoors. The zinc layer is indeed very thin and is not as resistant as other types of surface treatments.
There are actually two different ways to surface treat the steel. One method involves lowering the steel plate into a bath of zinc and then applying electricity to the steel. Afterward, the zinc forms a thin layer on the steel, and it is now surface treated.
Do you need it for outdoor use? Don't worry. We also have steel plates that are hot-dip galvanized or hot-galvanized. In this process, the steel plate will be immersed in a large bath of zinc at 460 degrees Celsius. This provides a thicker layer of zinc than electro-galvanizing and is thus better protected for outdoor use. This method is particularly used for lamp posts, guardrails, screws, brackets, and much more.
Stainless steel plates for wet environments
When you think of steel, you probably also think of stainless steel, and there is good reason for that. It is one of the most commonly used materials for outdoor use, as it requires a lot for it to begin to rust. For stainless steel to rust, it must be exposed to saline air or acidic liquids.
If you need steel plates near water, you should ensure that they are acid-resistant steel. This way, you maintain the beautiful and shiny appearance. Steel is classified as stainless as soon as it contains 12 percent chromium. Additionally, there can also be added:
- Nickel
- Molybdenum
- Manganese
All of this is intended to give the steel higher strength or better weldability. A steel plate also becomes acid-resistant when at least two percent molybdenum is added. You can read more about the individual steel plate under the product description.
