Keep an eye on the energy labeling scheme
In Denmark, we have an energy labeling scheme designed to inform consumers about how energy-friendly and energy-efficient each light source is. Energy-efficient products are advantageous for both the environment, and in the long run, they also provide savings for the consumer, as they use less energy. Originally, the scale ranged from A to G, but it has since been expanded to include A+, A++, and A+++, as products have become better and more energy-efficient over the years.
When choosing the right light source, you should look for energy class A or an LED light source. LED bulbs are still considered the most energy-friendly type. It’s also a good idea to take a closer look at the following:
- Lumen (lm): Indicates the brightness of the bulb. The higher the lumen, the more light the bulb emits.
- Ra-value: Indicates the bulb's ability to reproduce colors, rated on a scale from 0 to 100. Bulbs for indoor use should have a Ra-value of at least 80. Daylight has a Ra-value of 100.
- Kelvin: Indicates the color temperature. The higher the Kelvin degrees, the cooler the light emitted. 2,700-3,000 corresponds to a warm light similar to incandescent and halogen bulbs, while 3,500-6,500 is a whiter, neutral light that more closely resembles daylight.
Make sure the light source fits the lamp
It is, of course, important to choose a light source that fits the socket of the lamp. The most common socket types are:
- E27
- E14
- GU10
E27 has a large base and is often used as standard in many ceiling lamps, while E14 is smaller and typically used in table lamps, wall lamps, and chandeliers. If you need spots, it is usually a GU10 socket that you need. However, there are also other types – for example, G5.3, which is smaller in size.
Choose LED as your new light source
LED spots:
LED bulbs and energy-saving bulbs use 4-5 times less power than halogen bulbs. Halogen bulbs have a lifespan of about 2 years, while LEDs last 10-15 years and energy-saving bulbs last about 6-10 years on average. Besides the annual savings on electricity consumption, there is also savings in the purchase of bulbs thanks to the longer lifespan of LEDs.
LED tubes:
You can, for example, choose LED fluorescent tubes for new light fixtures or lighting systems. LED fluorescent tubes use less energy and also last 2-5 times longer than regular fluorescent tubes. You should not replace fluorescent tubes in old fixtures with LED tubes yourself, as it requires modifications to the fixture that must be done by a licensed electrician.
