What types of sealing strips are available?
There is a wide variety of sealing strips available in different materials, each with various advantages and disadvantages. The profile of the strip is especially crucial here. The profile refers to the design of the strip, and they are often named after their shape - it could be various profiles such as a P-profile or D-profile.
Many of the sealing strips are made from EPDM rubber, which is a synthetic type of rubber suitable for solutions that have outdoor contact. EPDM rubber can withstand UV rays from the sun without degrading.
Likewise, neither heat, liquid, nor ozone poses a challenge for synthetic rubber; however, oils and various solvents can cause problems. It's worth considering this if you plan to paint doors, windows, or frames to avoid damaging the sealing strips with oil-based paint.
There are also sealing strips made from silicone. These often represent a slightly more expensive option but retain both form and function for a longer time.
How to install your sealing strips
There are also significant differences in how the strips are installed. For some strips, nails and screws are required, but most commonly, self-adhesive strips are used.
You can determine the right size sealing strip by measuring the gap between the frame and the door or window. Press a piece of modeling clay or dough into the frame and close the door or window. This will create an impression showing the gap between the wood. You can measure this, which is crucial for determining your strip thickness.
When measuring how much of your sealing strip you need, measure the inner sides of your frames. Use a measuring tape and note the measurements. Choose an appropriate length—and preferably a little extra for safety.
Now you need to install the sealing strips. When removing the old sealing strip, ensure you remove any remnants left in the frame. The adhesive works best on a clean surface. Cut your new strips to size and see if you can cut them at an angle so they can meet in a miter joint.
This is an excellent time to use a scissors designed for strips, so you can be sure they are cut at the correct angle. When applying the new rubber, start from the top and work your way down, peeling off the backing as you go. Make sure to press the strip firmly to ensure the adhesive bonds well with the wood.
