Find square steel tubes with different surfaces
At Ahlsell, you can choose square tubes with decapitated, un-decapitated, and hot-dip galvanized surfaces. Each type has its own advantages. Decapitated means that the surface is cleaned by subjecting the tube to an acid bath, which removes scale and provides a smoother and more attractive surface.
The hot-dip galvanized variants consist of square tubes in steel that have been dipped in molten zinc. This creates a chemical process that protects the steel against corrosion – for example, rust – and enhances resistance as well as durability. This also makes hot-dip galvanized square tubes particularly suitable for outdoor environments.
Square tubes with cold-formed or hot-formed profile?
We offer square tubes with both cold-formed hole/tube profile and hot-formed tube profile. Cold-formed steel is not processed at high temperatures, but instead at room temperature, where it is rolled to form the desired shape and size. The process results in cold-formed steel being lighter and slightly more elastic than hot-formed steel. This essentially means that cold-formed steel is easier to cut and bend.
Square tubes with a hot-formed profile are typically the cheapest option and are characterized by having a rougher surface. Both cold-formed and hot-formed profiles are generally suitable for the same purposes. Also remember in both cases to surface treat the steel – for example, with paint – if you use it outdoors.
